Notes
A
few words about ships: A character’s first command will be
a Sloop of 28 guns. He will be called captain by courtesy, although
he is only a Master&Commander (don’t ask me why). A Sloop
carries two Lieutenants and two Midshipmen. Next step up is a Frigate (5th
rate ) of 44 guns, with the same number of officers (2 lieutenants,
2 midshipmen) but more crew, plus two Master’s Mates. A 4th
rate SOL (Ship of the Line) of 50 – 64 guns carries three
Lieutenants, three Midshipmen, and three Master’s Mates.
A 3rd rate SOL of 74 guns carries four Lieutenants and four Mids,
and three Master’s Mates. 1st and 2nd rate SOL carry five
lieutenants and, naturally, up to five Mids, as well as five Master’s
Mates (a full deck – carpenter, gunner, purser, sailmaker,
surgeon).
Ships which get sunk disappear from the game (BR 6 usually does the
trick). However, new ones will appear as captured enemy ships are
bought into the service. The decision whether a ship is bought into
the service lies with the GM.
Royal
Marines: The
Royal Marines are an elite institution, unique in their role
of seaborne regular infantry. Each ship carries a detachment
of RMs: Sloops carry 30 Marines under a Subaltern, 5th rates
and 4th rates carry 60 Marines under a Captain, 3rd rates and
2nd rates carry 100 Marines under a Major, and 1st rates carry
150 Marines under a Lt.Colonel
