From the rules, page 39, under the heading ROYAL MARINES: "The Royal Marines are an elite institution, the equivalent of the RNHB and unique in their role of seaborne regular infantry."
If I recall correctly, the RNHB in En Garde is a regiment that is constantly at the front. From the description of the Royal Marines in the Briny rules, the status of the Royal Marines of being "at war" is dependent on the activity of the ship to which each Royal Marine is assigned. Is the second sentence of this paragraph a true statement?
And if it is true that the status of being at war/at peace is dependent on the activity of the ship to which each Royal Marine is assigned, ought the players whose characters are applying to RM then turn in contingency orders in case their characters are ashore?
Furthermore, in keeping with the RM being the spiritual equivalent of the RNHB, does each applicant begin as a private, regardless of social standing, or can one purchase a commission? Also, what is the duty weeks per month breakdown for members of the RM? Is it two weeks' duty for lowest rank, one week duty for the next rank up, and no duty for the third rank? As it stands, the first rank look like recruits or privates, the second rank is Lieutenant, and the third Captain -- which means RM Lieutenants assigned to ships in port will have a week of duty per month, assuming my assumptions are true.

yes each player who joins must join as a private and work his way up the ranks, there is no shortcut to becoming an officer.
As to being at the front, each marine is attached to a ship, he can opt to be atached to the Blockade sqn and thus be at sea until he wishes to return. However when attached to a regular ship (Red, White or Blue Sqn) he goes to sea when they do and takes part in battles just as the crew do.
I hope that is correct and i am sure Carol will correct me if I am wrong...
In the same area of questions, the manual say "Characters who wish to enrol in the RM as privates must have an endurance of 110 or better and an expertise of 9 or better. Characters with a N.A. of 1 are not accepted."
Felt it was confusing. expertise of 9 or better. What stat is that for? I thought at first NA, but that didn't make sense with the last sentence. Swordsmanship??
Was looking at joining, but confused on that part of the requirement
